We’re going to get right down to the fundamentals of connection, rhythm, and lead/follow within the musical context of slow and fast blues. By the end of our two-hour class, you’ll have a well-rounded understanding of Jookin’ blues dance.

Studio 2 (Main Building) - Catherine & Dom: Afrobeats Choreography
We will develop ~1.5 minutes of fun choreo for the class to learn over the course of an hour. Choreography will be designed to encourage body awareness, balance and rhythmic play (all things that will also develop their blues vocab and quality of movement). A portion of the class will be spent encouraging students to express their own interpretations to the music in a party/jam type atmosphere where we all get hype to celebrate/riff off of each other's contributions. Class will be open to all levels.
Studio 3 (Main Building) - Grace & Kara: Embrace
Not just a critical connection for most blues dances, close embrace is also one of the great pleasures of blues dancing in general. In this class, we’re setting out to achieve maximum snug for the coziest of dances.

There are many ways to include African movement in one’s Blues dancing, in this session we will focus on it’s subtlety. The Call & Response can be ever present, the music can lay on your dance to overall express what you feel.
Studio 3 (Main Building) - Grace & Kara: What Do I Do with my Hands?
You feel pretty comfortable with your dancing, but what do you do with your hands? Spend the hour with Grace and Kara to explore how they think about hand movement and shapes, both in solo and in partnered blues.
Studio 8 (Bravo Building) - Julie & Dom: Solo: LEVEL UP (Intensive - audition required)
Get your solo movement workshopped and leveled up from two of the baddest solo blues dancers in the scene. The class content involve a combination of fast-paced, challenging solo content and individual feedback tuned to the needs of the group.

One thing that makes a dancer stand out is connecting and using their full body. We’ll focus on balance, alignment within hip and body tilting movement while allowing consistent pulse. To create a flow and ease in your body and it’s movement.
Studio 3 (Main Building) - Julie & Dom: Piedmont
Piedmont Blues is a style of acoustic blues music that uses a crisp, finger-picking guitar style. There are multiple dances that came about to Piedmont Blues; this class will provide an introduction to Piedmont Triple (a partnered dance) and a taste of Flat-footing (a solo dance).
Studio 8 (Bravo Building) - Laney: Icy Hot (Intensive - audition required)
As a scene, we can do cool, we can do subtle. But can we do explosive? Can we do hot? This class is a space to explore hotness and how it fits into the blues aesthetic.

Shuffle is one of the most common rhythms for Blues music and it rolls in the music as much as it can in the dance. We will cover various movements like the Choo Choo, a triple rhythm, and smooth transitions that keep you rolling.
Studio 3 (Main Building) - Ruth & Mike: Party Time
Yeaaaaah party jams! Come find new ways to dance to party songs- we’ll cover vocabulary, individual body movement, and partnering.

Studio 2 (Main Building) - Grace & Kara: Struttin' Sandbox
Struttin’ is a relaxed one-step blues dance originating in Memphis clubs. Especially useful in dancing to live music at dive blues bars, this dance can be done in very little space, but still lends itself to creativity in footwork and shaping. In this class, we’ll be honing in on technique-driven details followed by lesser-taught partnered traveling.
Studio 3 (Main Building) -Laney & Mike: Spins, Turns, Stops, & Drops
We'll cover movement techniques, as well as how to incorporate these things into your partner dancing. Come away with some new ideas to add seasoning to your social dancing.
Studio 7 (Bravo Building) - Julie & Ruth: Practice Drills
Come learn some of our favorite drills to take home! We'll cover drills that'll help you work on your leading skills, following skills, and individual mechanics.
Studio 8 (Bravo Building) - Catherine & Jenny: Partnership Challenge (Bring Your Own Partner)
We will go through a series of partnership challenging games/scenarios to test and push your partner dance. Ways to work in the moment, push the dance without exaggeration and self discovery that will give the class direction.
Note this class will have no rotation, you will need to come with a partner.

Let’s Jazz it up! Using your frame we are going to move across the floor, change our orientation to each other and the room in interesting ways all while maintaining our balance and dance.

We love this elegant ballroomin’ dance- we’ll share with you some of our favorite technique and vocabulary.
Studio 7 (Bravo Building) - Julie & Dom: Call and Response
Explore the possibilities for collaborating with the music and with partner, using a dynamic called call and response. We'll learn different tactics for responding to or riffing off of our partner's interpretation, for responding to the music with our own musical interpretation, and different structures and timings for trading off.
Studio 8 (Bravo Building) - Grace & Kara: Jedi Mind Tricks (Intensive - audition required)
Have you ever had a dance where it’s magically SO MUCH FUN, and you’re not entirely sure who came up with each idea? Yeah, us too. They’re the best. As follows, we both incorporate a lot of “creative suggestions” that invite moments of play with our partners. In this class, we’ll be exploring some of the ways in which follows can draw their partners in new directions.

Starting with West African Movement, focusing on shapes and rhythms. Moving onto partnered Blues dancing using those same shapes and rhythms. Goal to find the connections in these styles and connection within your body with this movement.

This is a drills & skills class – if you're looking to improve your balance & movement quality, come on down! You'll leave with plenty of exercises in your back pocket to take home with you.

By combining the musical traditions of North and Central America, Latin blues celebrates our musical differences and helps us to find common ground. Learn what ties these traditions together and how other dances influence our understanding of Latin blues.
